The end of the year is fast approaching, which means most of the year's best are about to come out, or just did. This week we'll be looking at La La Land, recent winner of the Critics' Choice Award for Best Picture, A Monster Calls, and probably several more. We'll also be giving you the rundown of said CCAs, and let you know what we voted for that didn't get the win.
It's a busy time, and there are a lot of films to get through, and now we're getting to the point where we really try to sell you on getting to theaters.

It's award season, and with the Critics' Choice Awards nominations out, the race has really begun. That means we'll be going through movies as fast as we can, and this week we have (at least) Hacksaw Ridge, Nocturnal Animals, and Love & Friendship, but we may squeeze a couple more in as well.
Beyond just looking at movies, we'll run through the Critics' Choice Awards nominations quickly, and let you know who we think will/should win when the award show hits on December 11th.

We're reviewing Allied & Rules Don't Apply this week, and we'll give you an initial rundown of the films that are in serious contention this award season.
Two very different movies, both getting a lot of marketing push, but do either of them deliver? More importantly, do you need to see either of them in theaters?
It's a World War II spy flick vs. Warren Beatty in what is possibly a passion project gone wrong. As the season gets into full swing, people are going to be talking about these, and we'll let you know if they're worth your time.

Two highly anticipated movies have hit theaters and people can't stop talking about either of them. Arrival has really surprised audiences and Amy Adams is getting a lot of attention herself. Anything with a connection to Harry Potter obviously has people out, but does this one live up to the franchise expectations, and can J.K. Rowling really deliver when it comes to offering up the screenplay, or does it all work better when someone can adapt her books?
We'll let you know if these are worth your time, and make sure you know which ones you need to make sure you get to for the rest of the year.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back inspired us to wait for Doctor Strange, which is a new one on us. On the positive side, Doctor Strange just came out, and it's the first movie of the end of the year big guns, which means it's time to get excited about movies again.
But, is Doctor Strange worth the time, and your money at the theater?
We may be fast approaching a critical point in both the Marvel film world, and the superhero world in general. You might not have expected it, but this critical point could turn on Doctor Strange, Wonder Woman, and Logan (an apparently odd film with very few mutants involved). Does Doctor Strange give a good feeling about that point? It's a tough call.

Ben Affleck's latest is a little off-kilter, and we'll let you know if The Accountant is worth your time. If nothing else, this is a film that takes a very different look at spy/action, with a lead suffering from autism, but leading a "Jason Bourne" life anyway.
That obviously leads to a lot of things can go wrong, not least Affleck's ability to portray a character that may be hard to get behind, and hard to deliver. Still, some are talking as though this could be the next big surprise.
We'll also run you through some industry news, touch on other films coming your way, and take your questions.

The best-selling novel comes to the screen, but those who have read it know that it's a tricky adaptation. Even without twists and tension, the book largely involves people thinking. Does the adaptation work, and is the result something you need to see in theaters? We'll let you know if this one makes the grade, and whether or not Emily Blunt pulls off acting drunk.
We'll also let you in on some of our thoughts about upcoming films as we get closer and closer to awards season.

Tuesday Oct 04, 2016

It's finally time to see what Tim Burton has in store for us with Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, and we'll let you know if it's worth your time. This one has Burton written all over it from the outset, but does it all come together, and is it something you need to see in theaters... and, who is this for anyway?
We'll also give you a preview of what's coming your way leading into award season, and make sure you know about some indie titles on the horizon.

We're reviewing The Magnificent Seven this week, and it's a great break from the less-than-stellar offerings that have hit theaters at the end of the summer. A showy cast takes on a classic, but can they make it work, and is it ultimately worth your money?
We'll also take you through the latest industry news, give you a quick rundown of the new Fall show on TV, and we've got a new Critic Takedown for you!

Monday Sep 12, 2016

Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks come together to give you the story of Sully, the pilot who landed a plane of a river in New York without serious injury to anyone. Though hailed as a hero, he soon came under scrutiny for his decision not to head to either of two nearby airports. Simulations seem to show that he could have made it, but he sticks by his decision.
It's an interesting story, and Eastwood and Hanks don't really need to prove themselves, but does it all work here, and is it something you need to get to theaters for? We'll let you know, and let you in on the latest industry news, and possibly even have another critic takedown for you. We'll also get in some interview clips with the cast and crew.
